Change your perspective: Can I? v How Can I?

Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value.
— Albert Einstein

When it comes to trying out new things, whether learning new skills or new habits to get up in the early morning to start the day, we always begin to question ourselves on if we can actually do it. But the fact of the matter is each time we question ourself, this begins to cause doubt in our minds as to why we can’t. This is known as the Can I? attitude.

The thoughts that run through our minds are:

  • Am i capable of doing this?

  • What if I can’t?

  • How would others think of me?

This was me when I first started learning how to draw animations of friends and actors/actresses. There I was watching endless YouTube videos on “How To’s” then having trial and error moments of drawing which ends up looking like one big smiley face, literally.

It was not until I kept trying that I changed my perspective from can I to how?

This made me grow my curiosity to how this is done and the technique needed to draw an image and make it animated as possible yet almost picture perfect with Morgan Freeman and Tom Hardy. But it all started when I asked myself how.

  • How can I make this image animated?

  • How can I make the image almost the same with skin and hair colour?

  • How can I use this skill to serve others?

The last question comes when I know i’ve grown to learn the principles of drawing and my first thought is to create a fundraising where all the money goes to a charity of choice whilst anyone who wishes to donate can decide on the picture which they’d like. This is my next goal which will be soon be happening.

Always try and see where you end up when learning new things. It can be daunting at first but once you build the momentum and rhythm needed, make that habit or skill yours with willingness to serve others.
