Word of the year: Gratitude

The word "gratitude" is ideal for the word of the year, especially this year. The dictionary defines gratitude as the quality of being thankful, and a readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. It's a simple yet powerful reminder to look for the good in everything, whether it’s something big or small.

Gratitude is a contagious state of mind. When we express gratitude, it can often inspire those around us to do the same. What this does is create a positive ripple effect which helps to lift the spirits of everyone involved.

Power of gratitude

The power of gratitude is undeniable. When we take a moment to be still and appreciate the good things in our lives, it can have a transformative effect on our mindset and even our health. Here are just a few reasons why gratitude is so important and how it can inspire us to live our best lives:

1. Gratitude helps us focus on the positive: It's so easy to get caught up in negative thoughts and feelings, but practicing gratitude helps us shift our focus to the good things in our lives which in turn supports our mood, and mental well-being. I’ve personally been learning from this by coming back to my vision whenever i do feel negative thoughts coming along.

2. Gratitude helps us connect with others: When we express appreciation for the people in our lives, it can strengthen our relationships and bring us closer together. Whether it’s gratefulness for things they have done for you or just for being there, take a moment to share your gratitude with your loved ones each day.

3. Gratitude helps us find contentment: Focusing on the things we have rather than what we lack can help us find contentment and happiness in the present moment. Remind yourself that what you have can be enough.

4. Gratitude can inspire us to be kinder: When we're grateful for what we have, it can inspire us to pay it forward and be kind to others. This can be shown through actions or simply through your attitude.

5. Gratitude can motivate us to make positive changes: When we're grateful for the opportunities and resources we have, it can motivate us to make the most of them and strive for a better future.

Whether it's expressing appreciation for the people in our lives or finding gratitude for the simple pleasures in life, there are always reasons to be grateful. If you need something to help find your way there, my book “Authentically You” is a good starting point that will help guide you through the often-complicated world of emotions and teaches you how to harness them for the good of your life.

So, as we wrap up this challenging year, let's take a moment to reflect on what we're grateful for. It might be a small thing, like a beautiful sunset or a good book. It might be something bigger, like a strong support system or a sense of purpose. Whatever it is, taking time to appreciate it can bring a sense of calm and perspective to our lives.

Here's to a brighter, more grateful year ahead!
