Kindness

What does kindness mean to you?

I thought I knew what kindness meant when I was young. Being nice to other people, making them happy by doing the right thing and often the good thing as much as possible.

Right?

Well, not entirely. As I’ve grown older and gained more life experience, I’ve discovered that kindness comes in many forms. From being kind to yourself to acts of service (whether random or intentional). It exists as heartfelt words of encouragement, thoughtful gestures of affection, and compassionate acts of generosity.

Aesop, the ancient Greek storyteller, once said,

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

In a world filled with struggle and pain, kindness is like a deep cleansing breath that rejuvenates us with its purity, refreshes us with its goodness, and gives us the strength to persevere despite our troubles.

Where do we begin with kindness?

You are the change

Kindness starts with yourself

Kindness starts at home. Treating yourself as you would anyone else you care about. We usually talk about kindness in relation towards other people but kindness towards yourself is just as important.

You may have heard “you can’t love other people until you can love yourself.” While I don’t believe this is 100% true, I think how you treat and talk to yourself becomes the foundation from which you approach your other relationships.

Kindness is a superpower

Acts of Kindness

It can be unexpected to intentional.

Simply a Thank you or paying for the coffee, for the person in front goes a long way. You have the ability to completely change someone’s day and it can be as easy as a smile, a kind word, or a thoughtful gesture.

Keep it simple.

It may seem small to you, but it could make a huge difference to someone else and in turn, help lift your happiness and wellbeing.

One kind act can change someone’s life. Many such acts can create a movement.
