Self Reflection

Socrates famously said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

And while this dictum is certainly true, self-reflection is not necessarily an easy thing to practice. We live in an incredibly fast-paced world. Our mobile phones are constantly buzzing, social media is infinitely calling, and Netflix always has something new to binge on.

Taking the time for reflection is a bit of a lost art. Most of us, unfortunately, are living unexamined lives.

This shouldn’t be the case. Few things are more valuable than self-reflection.

But what exactly is self-reflection? And what are some simple ways to practice it?

I love doing a quick weekly review at the end of every week. It’s a time for me to celebrate what I got done that week and even plan a few things for the next week which i’ve learned from. I can guarantee that it will not only boost your productivity for the week ahead but also gives you a chance to pause and reflect on the progress you made over the past week.

Benefits

Reflecting on your week is more than just saying “this week was good” or “this week was bad” — it’s about increasing your awareness of what you were thinking, feeling, and doing (everything you have control over), so you can decide deliberately if that’s how you want to keep showing up in the world.

When you reflect on your week, it brings awareness to your thoughts, feelings, actions, and results. I.e.: it has a really positive effect on your mindset, and it helps you understand underlying emotions you may not even be aware of.

Every Friday afternoon or Sunday morning, I do a quick review of the prior week:

• What gave me energy?

• What drained my energy?

• What should I have said no to?

• What could have been delegated?

It’s a simple, effective way to close out the prior week and set intentions for the week ahead.

Final thouGhts

I hope this post has encouraged you to make self-reflection a bigger part of your life Remember that reflection is not about overthinking or focusing on the past – this is a time to connect with yourself.
